Chlorhexidine compared with povidone-iodine solution for vascular catheter-site care: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE Bloodstream infections related to use of catheters, particularly central-line catheters, are an important cause of patient morbidity, mortality, and increased health care costs. This study evaluated the efficacy of skin disinfection with chlorhexidine gluconate compared with povidone-iodine solution in preventing catheter-related bloodstream infection. DATA SOURCES Multiple computeriz...

Cholorhexidine, octenidine or povidone iodine for catheter related infections: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Protection of the catheter site by antimicrobial agents is one of the most important factors in the prevention of infection. Povidone iodine and chlorhexidine gluconate are the most common used agents for dressing. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of povidone iodine, chlorhexidine gluconate and octenidine hydrochloride in preventing catheter related infections. ...

Chlorhexidine-based antiseptic solution vs alcohol-based povidone-iodine for central venous catheter care.

BACKGROUND Although chlorhexidine-based solutions and alcohol-based povidone-iodine have been shown to be more efficient than aqueous povidone-iodine for skin disinfection at catheter insertion sites, their abilities to reduce catheter-related infection have never been compared. METHODS Consecutively scheduled central venous catheters inserted into jugular or subclavian veins were randomly as...

Use of chlorhexidine-impregnated dressing to prevent vascular and epidural catheter colonization and infection: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES Vascular and epidural catheter-related infections cause significant morbidities and mortality in hospitalized patients. This meta-analysis assessed the effect of chlorhexidine-impregnated dressing on the risk of vascular and epidural catheter bacterial colonization and infection. METHODS Literature search was based on MEDLINE (1966 to 1 November 2005), EMBASE and Cochrane Controlle...

Chlorhexidine-alcohol versus povidone iodinealcohol antisepsis for catheter-related infection prevention: an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial

Introduction Catheter-related infections are common life-threatening healthcare-associated infections whose incidence can be decreased by improving the quality of care. Optimisation of skin antisepsis is essential to prevent short-term catheter-related infections. We hypothesised that chlorhexidine-alcohol was more effective than povidone iodine-alcohol as a skin antiseptic for preventing infec...
